About The Event
The Resonance Project invites you to an evening of lively, tuneful, and heartwarming music with From the Isles: A Scottish Baroque Concert.
Scottish Baroque music emerged from a fascinating cultural encounter in 17th- and 18th-century Scotland, blending the elegance of Italian art music with the spirited energy of Scottish fiddle tunes and folk traditions. These musical worlds met in Edinburgh’s drawing rooms, concert halls, and social gatherings, creating a distinctive repertoire that bridges classical and traditional music.
The influence of Scottish folk music even reached Italian composers. Francesco Geminiani, an Italian violinist and composer, was captivated by Scottish melodies played by Scottish musicians in London. Geminiani drew on them in his compositions, bringing their distinctive character into the refined world of the Italian sonata. His music offers a wonderful example of how folk traditions and classical art music inspired and enriched one another.
Inspired by Forest Hill Church’s 2025 pilgrimmage to Scotland and Ireland, Ying embarked on a journey of musical discovery then. She found that many Scottish melodies preserved in 17th- and 18th-century collections are still played today at Scottish dances and community gatherings. This concert celebrates the remarkable continuity of these traditions, bringing together the music of the past and the living folk culture of the present.
Joining us for this special performance is James MacQueen, Scottish fiddle player and a member of Forest Hill Church.
We hope you’ll join us for an evening of music, art, and reflection. Tickets are available at RMseries.com. Pay-What-You-Can tickets are always available. Contact Ying (music@fhcpresb.org) with any questions!
