SUMMARY:The Resonance Project Concert: In the Face of Silence
DESCRIPTION:The Resonance Project’s Next Concert is Coming Up!\n“In the Face of Silence”\nIrwin Shung\, piano\nAnn Yu\, violin \nSarah Tindall\, cello \nViolinist Ann Yu\, cellist Sarah Tindall\, and pianist Irwin Shung present works by composers who witnessed the worst humanity had to offer and still found a way to sing beautifully. Featured are Prokofiev’s First Violin Sonata (1948)\, which reflects the introspective and melancholic mood of his personal struggles amid the pervasive atmosphere of fear during the Stalinist era\, and Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor (1944)\, composed in the wake of Stalin’s purges\, which powerfully conveys both grief and resilience. Tickets are $15-20 each\, and Pay-What-You-Can tickets are always available! More information is available at RMSeries.com.

SUMMARY:Repair! Restore! Rise!: A Reception Celebrating Racial Repair to Eliminate College Debt
DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating Natasha Lovelace\, former Cleveland Heights resident and the first recipient of Forest Hill Church’s Racial Educational Debt Repair Award. \nThis award is the work of the Racial Repair & Restoration (RR&R) Task Force\, launched in 2022 to address the deep and lasting impact of systemic racism—specifically the disproportionate burden of student loan debt on Black communities. \nAfter a thoughtful review process involving over 20 candidates\, Natasha was selected as a Black female college graduate carrying the weight of educational debt. \nWHY IT MATTERS \n\nBlack graduates carry more student debt on average than any other group.\nThis debt limits wealth-building opportunities like buying a home\, saving for retirement\, or starting a family.\nBlack women are especially impacted—earning degrees without closing the income gap.\nThis crisis threatens the financial future of millions\, as the ACLU and Brookings Institution have reported.\n\nOUR RESPONSE: Put FAITH into action! \n“[The President’s] baseless attacks on DEI are attacks on the promise of America\, the promise that everyone should be able to build the life of their dreams without barriers standing in their way.”\n—Andrea Abrams\, Executive Director\, Defending American Values Coalition \nJoin us to celebrate this step toward racial and economic justice. \nRegister \n

SUMMARY:Pacesetters Picnic and Hike
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on for a deli potluck picnic with optional hikes to follow (.2 miles up to 3 miles) on May 16 at 12:00 at Liberty Park and Nature Center near Twinsburg. \nSign up for deli meats\, or bread\, or potato/coleslaw/mac salad by way of email to Laurie and Keith Logan. \nAdmission is free and there is plenty of parking near the handicap accessible Nature Center. Carpooling may be worth the effort as the park is a 35-minute drive from church. \nThis event is “rain or shine” (in keeping with our NEOH grittiness) so pack a raincoat if the forecast is less than ideal. The picnic pavilion is outside but under roof protection. \n \nAt 3\,000 acres\, Liberty Park is the largest natural area managed by Summit Metro Parks and is home to many unique geological features. \nLong before Liberty Park was formed\, prehistoric people camped here\, drank from the clean\, cold springs and hunted game. Upon European settlement\, trees were cleared for farming\, but maples were spared for their sweet sap. \nThe park harbors countless rare and endangered species\, including Indiana bats\, marsh wrens and bald eagles\, as well as more common species like beavers\, otters\, red-backed salamanders\, wood frogs\, gray rat snakes\, and numerous dragonflies and butterflies. Large trees stand on rock ledges and in wetlands within the conservation area\, where fens and bogs are “protected” by poison sumac and swamp rose. In 2006\, Liberty Park was designated as an Important Bird Area by the Audubon Society and in 2020\, Summit Metro Parks completed a 15-year project to restore 5 miles of stream and 100+ acres of wetlands at Pond Brook.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tour with the International Civil Rights Center & Museum
DESCRIPTION:Join us to travel to Greensboro\, North Carolina on a guided interactive virtual tour of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum – from the comfort of your own computer! \nThis guided tour brings history to life\, engaging participants with the powerful stories and artifacts that shaped the Civil Rights Movement. It is perfect for sparking critical discussions and deepening understanding of activism and equality. This virtual tour will help connect past struggles to present-day lessons. \nAnimating an iconic national historic landmark\, recognized across the globe\, the International Civil Rights Center & Museum opened in 2010 as a comprehensive museum of the Civil Rights Movement in the US and an innovative educational organization devoted to understanding and advancing civil and human rights in this country and the world. It commemorates the Feb. 1\, 1960\, beginning of sit-ins at a whites-only lunch counter in Greensboro\, NC. The innovative protest reflected meticulous planning carried out with colleagues at Bennett College. Their non-violent direct action challenged the American People to make good on promises of personal equality and civic inclusion enunciated in the Constitution. The fast-spreading Sit-In Movement ignited by the Greensboro protests served as a historical inflection point\, renewing the Civil Rights Movement as a whole — the Sit-In Movement. \nRSVP by email: racialequitybuddies@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Beginning Genealogy Course: How to Build Your Family History and Share Your Ancestors’ Stories
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 18\, 9:15-10:45am. Meet in South Hall. Class facilitated by Cindy Newton. \nDuring February\, we celebrated Black History Month with a remarkable program about our family’s origin stories\, along with a wonderful talk by Dr. Regennia Williams on preserving our oral history and how important it is to share that with our descendants. \nIn an effort to explore this further and to learn how to research our ancestors\, we will be conducting a series of beginning genealogy classes. This is the first step to gaining knowledge about their lives and then passing their stories on to the next generation. Who were they\, where did they come from\, where did they live\, what did they do for work\, who were their children\, what were their beliefs? \nFHC member Cindy Newton\, who has extensive experience as a family researcher and as a member of several genealogical societies\, will be conducting the classes. \nPlease fill out the Breeze form and Cindy will reach out to you with research forms to complete before the first class. \nRegister
