SUMMARY:Honoring the Life and Work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.
DESCRIPTION:This event will be a powerful community gathering honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. through music\, discussion\, and action. The program includes live gospel music\, a panel on Dr. King’s unfinished work\, interactive breakout sessions\, and a closing drum circle to inspire collective action. \nThe date is significant: Dr. King was assassinated on April 4\, 1968. This gathering is a robust call to action—blending culture\, knowledge\, and community to honor his legacy and advance his fight for equity and justice. \nWe begin with uplifting spiritual and gospel music to set the tone. A thought-provoking panel follows\, exploring Dr. King’s unfinished work and its impact on Greater Cleveland today. From there\, we move into interactive breakout sessions to reflect\, strategize\, and find ways to take meaningful action. Each group will share key takeaways before we close\, as we began\, with culture—this time\, a drum circle to embolden and energize us as we carry forward the work of justice. \nA continental breakfast will be served from 10:00-10:30am as part of the program. RSVP by emailing racialequitybuddies@fhcpresb.org\, or by calling the church office. \nPanelists:\nMatthew Ahn\, Attorney & Criminal Law & Justice System Expert\nBrenda Glass\, Trauma Expert\nChris Knestrick\, Director of the Northeast Homeless Coalition \nModerator and Cultural Artists:\nMaria Smith\, Attorney & Advocate\nProfessor Olu Manns\, Africana Studies\, Kent State\nDonna Walton\, Gospel Artist \nOur drum major for justice\, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr.\, not only stood with the poor\, oppressed\, and marginalized—he was treated as one of them. We strive to revive that spirit within ourselves\, acting boldly in the solidarity and justice he exemplified. \nHonor MLK by Demanding Real Change. Dr. King knew that justice requires more than words—it demands radical structural change. He spoke unapologetically about systemic racism\, writing in A Testament of Hope (1969)\, “White America must recognize that justice for Black people cannot be achieved without radical changes in the structure of our society.” In Stride Toward Freedom (1958)\, he reminded us\, “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice. In August 1967\, King spoke about the three evils “the sickness of racism\, excessive materialism\, and militarism.”. \nJoin Us. Stand in Solidarity. Take Action. \nSponsors: Racial Equity Buddies of Greater Cleveland • Federated Church UCC\,  Chagrin Falls • Pretrial Support Team of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland • The Eastside Citizens’ Empowerment Foundation of East Cleveland • The Peace and Justice Ministry of Lyndhurst Community of Faith Church

SUMMARY:King! Jackson!: A Musical
DESCRIPTION:Racial Equity Buddies are pleased to once again partner with Leonard Di Cosimo\, President of the Cleveland Federation of Musicians\, AFM Local 4 to present to the community – free of charge – the musical King! Jackson!\, followed by a jazz concert! \nThe King! Jackson! musical explores the friendship and partnership between Mahalia Jackson and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Jackson was an American gospel singer\, widely considered one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century\, and a close friend and confidant of King. \nMahalia shouted to Dr. King and changed history. Dr. King’s prepared remarks for the March on Washington did not include nor reference Dr. King’s dream. While King was delivering his remarks\, Mahalia shouted and exhorted\, “Tell them about the dream\, Martin!” Trusting Mahalia’s instincts implicitly\, King put aside his text and launched into “I Have a Dream\,” which would become his most famous speech. Without Mahalia\, there would not have been that speech\, not that historic day! \nUnfortunately\, but not surprisingly\, Mahalia does not receive the recognition that other male artists who worked with King received. Yet\, arguably\, she was closer to King and more supportive of his work than most other artists. On April 26\, we celebrate and recall her contributions to the human rights struggles. \nAfter the 40-minute musical\, we will be treated to a jazz concert hosted by WKHR 91.5 FM\, Ron “The Jazz Man” Davis\, featuring Shirley Cook. \nLight refreshments provided. \nTo reserve a seat or make an inquiry email racialequitybuddies@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Trustees' Project List
DESCRIPTION:Help Trustees Prioritize Its Strategic Project List\nThe Trustee Ministry over the past year has developed a three-year strategic project list to maintain the quality\, accessibility\, and welcoming of our interior and outside spaces. We need your input. On Sunday April 27\, right after the service in Fellowship Hall\, each of the projects will be displayed on a story board for your review. Trustee representatives will be standing by the story board to tell you about the respective project as well as answer any questions you might have. After reviewing all the projects\, you will then have an opportunity to indicate your top three priorities of the eight projects. We think this will not only be informative but fun as well. \nThe eight projects are: \n\nFellowship Hall Remodel\nMain Kitchen Floor Replacement and Remodeling\nCourtyard Gathering Space\nMain Hallway Update\nSanctuary Sacred Spaces and Chairs\nGeothermal Building Climate Control\nMain Hallway Bathroom Renovations\nFamily Youth and Children Space Renovation
